Seeing the
need for a new church in the Overbrook section of Greenville, a group of Baptist laypeople
began meeting with Reverend Kenneth Berry in the summer of 1950. Together they worked to
make the new church a reality, and on July 23, 1950, Overbrook Baptist Church was
organized.
Services were held in a tent and a barn before the church moved into its first building on
December 14, 1952. The first service in the present sanctuary took place on
September 27, 1959. Another education building was added in 1965, and additional
property was secured.
William Bolt
became Overbrook's pastor in January, 1952, and served until July, 1959. Cooper
Patrick began his ministry in 1960 and served until his retirement in March, 1988.
Rev. Patrick was elected Pastor Emeritus in April, 1989. Jim Thomason served as
pastor of Overbrook from August, 1988 to August, 1995. Kenneth Lance served as
Pastor from May 1996 until February 2002. Rev. Rod Kerr is currently serving as our
Interim Pastor. On July 14, 2002, Rev. Dale Sutton was called to be the sixth Pastor of
Overbrook Baptist Church.
Our Ministry
Team together with dedicated support staff and lay leaders, Overbrook offers a
well-rounded ministry including worship, Bible study, music, fellowship and age
appropriate activities, missions and more.
Overbrook is
still a leader in ministering to the greater community through Meals on Wheels, quality
child care and kindergarten programs, involvement in the local crisis center, an
after-school tutoring ministry, website ministry and many other ministries.
With a strong past
and present to build upon, our church looks forward to making a difference as she carves
out a place of service in the 21st century. Equipped with a heart for the people of
Greenville and beyond, she is committed to serve the need of her neighbors with love and
integrity. Overbrook will continue to strive to advance the cause of Christ and His
Kingdom in this community and throughout the world.
